Do I have to Pay Duty when I Import a Car to Canada from the USA?

Canada Border Services Agency does not charge duty on importations of vehicles that were originally built in USA or Canada.

Always check what the country of manufacturer is by getting an AutoCheck Report before determining whether you want to buy the vehicle or not as this could potentially add a couple thousand dollars onto your total price after import. If it is an eBay Canada Car Auction, a quick way to check this is by either clicking on the VIN number at the top of the auction, where you will be taken to an AutoCheck VIN report, or by going to MyBorderPro.com and entering the eBay item number through their duty and tax calculator.

An example of a situation where you would have to pay duty is with some German vehicles you are forced to pay a 6% duty. Also be careful buying some American brand vehicles as some of them are built in Mexico. Japanese brand vehicles are usually built in Canada or US but are sometimes built in Japan.

Here is a chart that outlines any duties you may have to pay depending on the vehicle you are import:

Vehicles Manufactured in North America Duty Free
Vehicles Manufactured outside North America 6.1% on average
Vehicles over 25 years old Duty Free
